The Art of Asking

When one meets people, what should one ask? How does asking affect the impression and perception during the conversation?

“Asking” is fundamentally used for getting answers from any relevant sources. By asking, one can gain relevant knowledge that may apply in the future. With the technology advancement, the information can be acquired through typing several keywords instead of finding multiple information from books/people.

We can virtually know everything by searching the correct keywords on the internet. The overwhelming information can be acquired where one may hardly digest the information given may mislead one to make a wrong decision.

Ideally speaking, most people could get the trivial information by asking, unless the information is premium. Virtually speaking, it would not become an issue for that. Provided the intelligence that the algorithm possesses, it can provide objective input to the user. The data is gathered by processing countless facts and subjective experiences, though it could be manipulated by the programmer.

With the objectiveness and lack of emotion that algorithms have, the focus on the art of asking should shift to human interaction. One could provide the answer through opinion and subjective experiences.

One would tend to share something that one is passionate to others. By asking a question related to one’s hobby, the interaction benefits mutual parties. The person who enquires will gain the information, while the listener feels appreciated with the knowledge possessed.

It is also a way to create a small talk topic by asking something related to the listener. However, there is a caveat: the question asked must be genuine. The effect will be detrimental where one asks a question where the counterparts realize it is used for the conversation extension.

The depth of the question is also varies with the person one talks to. An extrovert may prefer to have a casual conversation. On the other hand, an introvert will be more interested in talking about something in-depth. A person background also could play a significant factor in the question topics. If one would ask a question that is too simple or unrelated, the listener may look down on the asker.

“Asking” in human interaction is not merely a way to get an answer, where this “action” can be supported by technological advancement. However, “asking” still play a crucial role in human interaction, where people can gauge competency and impression. Therefore, “asking” can be a double-edged sword that can determine one’s social skill, where the art of asking varies from one another.
